Essaouira

Discovering Essaouira

Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, meaning 'small fortress,' is surrounded by a Vauban-style wall. It has served as an international trading port connecting Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa to Europe and the rest of the world. Essaouira has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. It has been occupied by the Romans, Carthaginians, Berbers, Portuguese, and French.

In 1765, Sultan Mohammed ben Abdellah initiated its construction with several renowned architects, including Théodore Cornut. Essaouira experienced exceptional development, becoming the country's most important commercial port and introducing tea to Morocco. Following the bombings in 1844 and the establishment of the French protectorate, it lost its significance as an international port and the diplomatic capital of the country.

Essaouira has undergone a renaissance due to tourism and its cultural vocation. In 1957, the name Essaouira was officially adopted. It has also become a multicultural and artistic city, located on Morocco's Atlantic coast between Casablanca and Agadir, making it a must-visit spot for surfing and kite-surfing enthusiasts.
